General Guidelines

Additionally, note the below Guidelines and Parameters as you prepare your design submissions:

Design Criteria

  • Teams shall submit two designs; one flora, one fauna, inspired by the natural world
  • Designs are for all-wool carpet in a residential setting; woven on Langhorne’s Jacquard Wilton Broadloom
  • Judges will consider design attributes for creativity and marketability

Parameters

  • There are no color restrictions
  • There is no set limit to the number of colors used, except the limitations inherent with Jacquard Wilton looms (2 frame 252 pitch, 3 frame 252 pitch, 4 frame 216 pitch, 5 frame 216 pitch)
  • Repeat of length must be 5 feet or less
  • Repeat of width must be able to repeat in 12 feet
  • Tightness of pile must be 9 wires per inch

Presentation

Each design should be mounted on art board with preferred colorway on top and the two other colorways below (should be able to flip up top two designs like a stenographer pad to see those below – Call us or ask your professor liaison if you have questions about this)

Good luck to you all. We are very excited to see some excellent designs. Just for fun, below is a picture of the actual carpet we weaved from the sample submission design.

Philadelphia University Textile Design students participating in the Morrow Design Competition had a great time at the Philadelphia Flower Show this week. Twenty students attended the evening, and enjoyed the presentation given by Show Designer Sam Lemheney. The exhibits showcased the colors, textures, scents and sounds of Hawaii. It was a wonderfully inspiring evening! A couple of the students’ favorite photos follow.

Creature-Created Designs at the Zoo

Bill Morrow presents Kim Lengel of the Philadelphia Zoo with a Langhorne Zebra design tapestry woven at mill in Bucks County, PA. We assured the giraffe that there were no zebras harmed in weaving the tapestry.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the zoo for taking the time and energy to host us yesterday. Several participants described the experience of being up-close-and-personal with wildlife as eye-opening in how they think of conservation and the design world’s relationship with the natural world.

Budding Inspiration at the Flower Show

Langhorne EVP Winnifred Morrow marvels at the spectacular orchid display at the International Flower Show along with a UArts student looking for inspiration for might become Langhorne’s new Eco Line. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, a competition sponsor, put on an excellent program for Morrow Design Competition students and created what is likely the most amazing display ever assembled anywhere.
